The Washington County Humane Society Serves…...

The Washington County Humane Society Board members serve the Washington County/Johnson City Animal Shelter with volunteers for their fundraisers. We run the Tri-Cities Dog Jog, an annual event held at Wing Deer Park, to help raise money for the shelter, which is used by the shelter for a variety of causes, such as the building fund.

We also help indigent families by filling out the paperwork necessary for grant money to pay for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. Many of our citizens are unable to afford the cost and would simply allow their animals to have litter after litter of puppies or kittens. However, through our efforts with a grant foundation, we have successfully enabled pet owners to spay or neuter their pets, which in turn helps lower the euthanasia rate at the Washington County/Johnson City Animal Shelter.

Our board members have volunteered many hours to help educate, teaching the young and the old the characteristics of a responsible pet owner, starting with the need for spaying and neutering. Although we may seem to be overemphasizing this topic, the spaying and neutering of pets is the only viable means of controlling the pet overpopulation without resorting to euthanasia.

We have helped low-income owners with needed medical attention for their pets by funding the veterinarian bills, and we would like to be able to set up a medical fund for the animal shelter as well.

We also run several rabies clinics a year, helping to eradicate the disease in family pets. Many people in our area have never taken nor will ever take their pets to the veterinarian's office, yet they will bring them to our rabies clinic for a low-cost vaccine against that deadly disease.

After last year's Dogwood and Cattails Ball, we donated $2,500.00 to the Johnson City / Washington County Animal Shelter to be used as an emergency medical fund. We hope that with your help we can increase that amount in 2006.

Our service to our community is greatly in need of funding and we hope that the proposal to follow will entice you to help us help our community members, both human and non-human.
