The Washington County Humane Society Board Is…...

The Washington County Humane Society Board is a group of volunteers from all walks of life (teachers, veterinarians, policewomen, entrepreneurial business owners) and one paid executive director who have one thing in common: our love for animals. We give of our time for the betterment of the animals in our area, hoping to make a difference in their lives.

The Washington County Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of pet owners in an effort to stem the tide of unwanted animals that will ultimately be euthanized. A second facet of this overpopulation problem has been the lack of funds to help low-income owners spay or neuter their pets. Through our efforts, we are now helping many owners with the costs of spaying and neutering through a foundation grant. Through the education of children and adults and the continued monetary aid to low-income pet owners, we hope to see a day when the Washington County /Johnson City Animal Shelter will no longer have to euthanatize dogs and cats due to overpopulation.

Also, we are firmly dedicated to stopping physical abuse and neglect of animals. We realize there is a correlation between abuse of animals and the abuse of women and children. The Humane Society works to get laws that protect animals enacted and works to get those breaking the laws punished.

We are also focused on stopping the inhumane sport of dog fighting in Washington County, which occurs on a regular basis. We would like to have the funds available to reward anyone who gives a tip that would lead to the arrest and conviction of leaders in these dog fighting rings.

The Washington County Humane Society focuses much of our fundraising efforts to helping the Washington County/Johnson City Animal Shelter. We have helped them raise money for their building fund, which has now been used to build more kennels so that the animals will be given more time to be adopted.

Each of us board members feels a deep commitment to the well-being of the animals, whether pets or farm animals, in our area.
